Statement from Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

Ken Harris was a wonderful public servant who always put the interests of his constituents first. On behalf of the entire City Council, our thoughts and prayers are with Ken’s family during this difficult time. Ken was always a gentleman, and a true servant to the citizens of Baltimore.

  1. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” I Thank God for allowing me the time to come to know Councilman Harris and to realize his dreams and visions for the citizens of Baltimore. I Thank God for placing Councilman Harris in my path during a time of need where he was able to assist my nephew with a work related project. I pray that in time God will ease the pain and bring back the smiles, laughter and joy that the family once had. Know that God will be anything you need him to be if you just call on him.

  2. I had the honor of knowing the good Councilman in my capacity as the legislative liaison for the Department of Public Works. Councilman Harris treated everyone with courtesy, good humor, and compassion. At the Council meetings I would always see Councilman Harris rise to tell the viewing audience and colleagues how proud he was of his daughter’s or son’s latest accomplishments, sned a loving message to his wife, or speak about a positive activity in his communities or his schools. He carried the conviction that a caring adult had a responsibility to step in and help guide a youngster onto the right path, and by that act, show that they mattered. This philosopy was not only reflected in his own life, but in such efforts as his pursuit of a truancy center that brought truants in, counseled them, and gave them the social services they needed to get their lives back on track and get them back in school. I am sure that Councilman Harris touched many lives and provided help to many, and hope for us all. It is by the life and good work of people like Councilman Harris that we learn what we can be, and see great hope for the future. I am deeply sorry that he will not be physically by our side as we work for the betterment of our City and its citizens, but I know he has provided a path in the hopes that many will follow.

  3. In my capacity as Deputy Director of the Department of Legislative Reference I worked closely with Councilman Harris on all of his Council resolutions. Because of this relationship I was keenly aware of his dedication to the citizens of Baltimore. He was particularly concerned that our children receive a meaningful education, stay off the streets, and live of life of personal and public purpose. He was also concerned that everyone be treated fairly by law enforcement. But more than anything else he loved his family. I hope that the memory of his love and life serves to erase the memory of the circumstances of his untimely passing. God Bless and Keep you.
